LargeUp Premiere: Slum Village – “Fall In Love” (Suns of Dub Remix)

Words by Jesse Serwer— Suns-of-Dub-Major-Lazer

Suns of Dub’s mix of Slum Village’s “Fall In Love” was easily one of our favorite tunes on their self-titled mixtape, premiered right here in December. There’s no real rocket science involved: Suns (at the suggestion of mixtape producer Walshy Fire) had their Addis Pablo play on top of the J Dilla-produced instrumental, creating a conversation between Addis’ melodica (in place of T3 and Baatin’s verses) and Dilla’s haunting hook.

In honor of J Dilla Month (the late producer’s 40th birthday was Feb. 7, and he also passed away during the month of February), Suns of Dub have shared the remix, available for the first time as a standalone track. Cop it below, hear more from Suns of Dub at their Soundcloud and go behind the scenes with Addis (son of the late Augustus Pablo) and Sons of Dub cohort Ras Jammy in our “Meditations” documentary series.

Words by Michellee Nelson~Screen shot 2014-02-13 at 2.13.26 PM

You won’t hear fans of Addis Pablo and Suns of Dub complain about a shortage of entertaining content and music from the crew. The group, along with Jah Solid Rock, have just released a documentary to follow up their upcoming album (which you can preview here) recently released album In My Father’s House on the label. The 38-minute film is directed by Kush I, director of Jah 9′s “Steamers,” and Jesse Royal’s “Modern Day Judas” videos.

The In My Father’s House documentary features interviews with a number of different artists and musicians including legendary guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith, who has worked closely with Suns of Dub and also played alongside Addis’ father, Augustus Pablo, at the height of his career.

If there’s anything we learned about Addis Pablo and his crew Suns of Dub in the last year, it’s that they are prolific. Following a busy 2013 that ended with a Major Lazer-produced mixtape, our Meditations documentary series and a performance with The Roots at the Okayplayer Holiday Jam, Addis is kicking off 2014 with a trio of limited-edition vinyl, pre-release singles, “Walls of Jericho,” “One Love, One Heart, One Family” and “Wareika Mystic,” via Holland’s Jah Solid Rock label.

The third and final video in our “Meditations”series — a trilogy of mini-docs (Catch Part 1 with Jesse Royal and Ras Jammy, and Part 2 with Jesse and Addis Pablo) revolving around the everyday spiritual life of Jamaica’s young musicians— depicts moments over the course of a day at the Kingston home of the Hendrix of roots reggae, guitarist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith. His home, better known locally as Inna Di Yard, is a studio, rehearsal space, meeting ground and all-around musical oasis, world renowned for the relaxed jam sessions.

LargeUp TV: Addis Pablo Meets The Roots in Brooklyn

Words by Michellee Nelson~OkayPlayer Holiday-Addis-Pablo

Sons of Dub brought the heartical vibes to Monday night’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam. Addis Pablo, son of Augustus Pablo, joined The Roots on stage during the LargeUp-produced “reggae” section of the annual jam session for a performance of Addis’ father Augustus Pablo’s classic “King Tubby’s Meets Rockers Uptown.” First released by the elder Pablo in 1976, the tune was the first dub track to gain popularity outside of Jamaica and to place on international charts. Onstage Monday night Addis was joined by Jah Bami, a colleague of his in the crew Suns of Dub, producing their own version of the mellowed track with James Poyser, Captain Kirk . Watch the performance here, and check out more coverage of the event here.

It was a busy week for Addis and Suns of Dub. In addition to their Holiday Jam performance, Suns of Dub also dropped a mixtape with Major Lazer/Walshy Fire and LargeUp featuring more than 30 tracks (download it here). We also launched his Meditations Pt. 2 video with Jesse Royal, shot in the hills outside of Kingston, Jamaica, by LargeUp/Raw Tings crew Tony Lowe and Taliesin Gilkes-Bower. Addis wrapped up things up with an appearance on the LargeUp Sessions where he added his melodica playing to an epic freestyle session by Bunji Garlin and Jah Bami, flatlining everyone inside Miss Lily’s. Look out for audio and photos from the session on LargeUp shortly. But first…”King Tubby’s Meets Rockers Uptown” live with the Roots!
