Jamaica’s Tarik “Rvssian” Johnston keeps his studio in Kingston, but the dancehall producer (formerly known as Russian with a ‘u’) currently resides in Miami. It is fitting then that a Latin thread runs through his latest batch of productions.

Everything Nice: Watch The First Video From Popcaan’s Upcoming LP

Words by Natalie Weiner–Popcaan-everything-nice-LargeUp

Popcaan has much to be thankful for—cosigns from artists like Pusha TDrake, Busta, and Snoop, a Billboard-charting single, multiple international tours… all before he’s dropped a full-length album. So it makes sense that he’s expressing his gratitude in “Everything Nice,” the first single off his upcoming Mixpak Records debut. Featuring an airy riddim from Dubbel Dutch, the track shows off Popcaan’s smooth vocals as he sings about balancing hard work and good times.

Popcaan has been rising up the dancehall ranks for a few years now. His abundant catchy, hook-filled singles have made him a household name in Jamaica and the Caribbean, and the aforementioned hip-hop collaborations have finally put him on the map in North America. His “unorthodox and oddly melodious delivery” has helped him move from Vybz Kartel protegé to one of dancehall’s biggest crossover artists. Hear more from the man himself in our LargeUp TV exclusive, “A Day In The Life with Popcaan.”

Fashion Fridays: DOOM x Clarks Originals

Words by Natalie Weiner—Clarks2

Clarks. Vybz Kartel, Scorcher, and Damian Marley are just a few of the Jamaican artists who’ve sung the praises of the venerable British brand, whose classic styles have been an integral part of Jamaican fashion for over 30 years. (For a complete list, check the graphic below). Seriously — the Jamaica-Clarks connection is so storied there’s even a book about it.

In recent years, the brand has been partnering with an ever-growing number of artists in recognition of its iconic status in the music world.  Though no Jamaican acts have been tapped as of yet, the latest artist to team with the brand has some Caribbean roots. That’s right—mysterious, metalfaced, New York-raised rapper MF DOOM is joining the ranks as the latest artist to collaborate on a special edition of the Wallabee shoe. And, yes, he’s part Trini (as well as Zimbabwean-British).clarks
