Ticket Giveaway: Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash 2013 in NYC

Words by LargeUp Crew—
Red-Bull-Music-Academy-Culture-Clash

For the past few years, Red Bull Music Academy has been organizing sound clashes pitting DJ crews from multiple genres against one another, in an annual “celebration of sound system culture and its ongoing influence on hip hop, dancehall and dance music.” The way we see it, the annual Culture Clash events are an opportunity for the rest of the music world to catch up to reggae and dancehall in the field of DJ-driven entertainment, and to see what they’ve been missing if they’ve never been to a true sound clash—which are centered on crowd interaction and have a whole different (and livelier) energy than a technical skills-oriented DJ battle.

I’m Okay: Red Bull x Jamaica

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, via Seen

redbullstudiojamaica
Just read Seen quoting the Jamaica Observer quoting Red Bull spokesmon William Mahfood about the new $25 million (JA, I’m assuming) studio-and-loft complex that the Austrian energy-gods are bankrolling in Kingston, the latest in a network of studios that includes Los Angeles, UK, South Africa, New Zealand. The plan is not to run it as a commercial studio but to open it free to local artists on an invitation-only basis. The international brand intends to enter the Jamaican music industry by early 2011, presumably to encourage the production of music along the lines of Delly Ranks’ Red Bull & Guinness riddim or Beenie Man and Future Fambo’s “Rum & Red Bull” anthem (watch both after the jump).

Our homies over at NCC just posted this web-umentary they did on big wave surfer Ian Walsh’s Jamaican sojourn, part of a Red Bull-sponsored series of workshops he’s doing with JA kids called Under My Wing. Talented friends, smart brands, helping the youth and gorgeous island beaches #theseareafewofourfavoritethings. While you’re over there check more of the intriguing trailer for Coast, Nile Saulter’s cinematic opus which recently screened at RedBones cafe in Kingston, just watch out for the spearguns.
