NYC: Win Tickets to See Los Rakas Live at SOBs Saturday (11/19)

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Y’all know we are Los Rakas stans around here. Hell, we are actually naturalized citizens of West Rakastan (henceforth I would like to be referred to as ‘Raka Stats.’ Not really.) And in the spirit of our homeland we are giving LargeUp readers a chance at visiting the motherland when Los Rakas come to New York this Saturday November 19th to bless the stage at SOBs.

Rakamentary: Los Rakas Debut Short Film “Cueria”

Words by Nico Simino

As part of their debut EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada, Bay area duo, by way of Panama, Los Rakas, have released a second mini-film clip titled ‘Cueria’. The short clip takes on the recent police mishaps over the last few years in Oakland, where the police department has used some pretty heavy handed tactics in responding to potential threats, killing one unarmed man in the subway system and the recent backlash against #OccupyOakland protesters. “Cueria,” which literally translates to, “take them (or it) out,” is pretty graphic but resonates nonetheless. Just as powerful, the rhythm track–an Afro-latin war dance produced by Chief Boima and Oro11 AKA Banana Clipz perfectly suits the Rakas’ blend of dancehall, hiphop, reggaeton, and hyphy.

Bay Players: Los Rakas x Goapele “Play” Remix

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Speaking of big Raka, LargeUp’s favorite Panabaynians just jumped on this refix of Okayplayer’s favorite Afrobaynian Goapele. LR shows their versatility with these verses on the certified babymaker “Play” and it’s nice to see bay solidarity in full effect and with such strong results. Stream or download below.

Panabay: Los Rakas Release Party Destroys Oakland

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Los Rakas just sent us this footage of their Oakland, CA release party for the Chancletas y Camisetas Bordadas EP which as you would expect was so heavy with Raka-representation that the water level of the SF Bay rose several feet. The webisode from Tek House TV is probably not gonna win any awards for lighting effects but it does what it needs to, which is capture the crazy, Panama flag-waving energy of the crowd, Raka Rich and Raka Dun’s onstage mic control and the fresh footwork of the turf dancers–some of whom you may recognize from the Soy Raka video. Not to start no East-West beef but just wait til we find some footage of our LargeUp-sponsored NY release event–ain’t no party like a New York party, where it ain’t a party til the headliners climb on top of a banquette! Cop C&CB here and stay tuned.

LargeUp Exclusive: Los Rakas “Borracho” + New EP

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Y’all know we have been repping Los Rakas something gargantuan for a minute–and any lingering doubts about them being the leaders of rap’s multilingual new school were dispelled Friday night when they tore down Tammany Hall (miraculously rebuilt within 24 hours) in the LES Friday night at their LargeUp-sponsored EP release bashy. That EP–Chancletas y Camisetas Bordadas–drops today and a few hours in it is already #1 on iTunes “hip-hop & reggaeton” charts. Not that we’re trying to take credit or anything. On the contrary, rather than big ourselves up, we’ll just reprint the big-ups Okayplayer gave us (*switching hats):

NYC: Los Rakas Release Event at Tammany Hall 8/19 + “Ta Lista” Download

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

As trumpeted, LargeUp is proud to bring you the official release event for Los Rakas’ new EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordadas (translated roughly as: “Flip-flops & Wifebeaters”) which is going down this coming Friday, August 19th at Tammany Hall in LES, New York. Controlling the DJ set is an all-star line-up including the Rice & Peas/Re-Opened core team of Max Glazer, DJ Gravy & Micro Don plus myself Eddie STATS (hola), pan-tropicalist Chief Boima (who produced several of the tracks on the EP) and Uproot Andy of Que Bajo fame (who also happened to produce Los Rakas’ breakthrough joint “Abrazame“). If thats not enough, Raka Dun and Raka Rich of LR will be hosting the vent in the flesh (and we have to expect that they’ll touch the mic at some point).
