Throwback Thursdays: Skratch Bastid on Beenie Man’s “Memories”

Words by DJ Skratch Bastid
Beenie Man Memories (Stop Live in the Past)

Something slightly different this week on Throwback Thursdays. Toronto turntablist DJ Skratch Bastid traces the roots of Beenie Man’s “Memories” back to soul man Jerry Butler and shows how the Chicago R&B scene of the ’60s and ’70s has had a profound influence on music in Jamaica, and how that same Chicago-inspired reggae has made its way back to the U.S. through some classic samples.

Peter Tosh's "Johnny B. Goode" cover

On Monday, National Heroes Day in Jamaica, the Stepping Razor was awarded a posthumous Order of Merit, a significant development for an artist whose relationship with the state during his lifetime was tenuous at best.

Throwback Thursdays: Resident Alien’s “Mr. Boops”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Prince Paul is known for his work with De La Soul, Gravediggaz, 3rd Bass and Handsome Boy Modeling School but the veteran hip-hop producer is no stranger to Caribbean music, either—or at least parodies of it. As highlighted in our recent rundown of Toppa Top fake reggae tunes, 2005′s ItsTrumental boasted a hilarious faux dancehall tune about a Boston creme donut (“Boston Top”). Baby Elephant, Paul and Don Newkirk’s project with P-Funk’s Bernie Worrell, featured Yellowman on the tongue-in-cheek “Cool Runnings,” from their lone LP.

Throwback Thursdays: Cosmo Baker on Jackal the Bear’s “For Real”

Words by Cosmo Baker

Jackal the Bear

Just as Mad Lion captivated New York’s Tri-State area in the mid ’90′s with the gruff and tuff raggamuffin rap of “Take It Easy,” Philly and the surrounding Mid-Atlantic region had their own equivalent of di Lion, in Jackal the Bear’s “For Real.” We knew world-renowned DJ and expert in all things Philly, Cosmo Baker, would have the story, and he did…for real.
