For the past few years, Red Bull Music Academy has been organizing sound clashes pitting DJ crews from multiple genres against one another, in an annual “celebration of sound system culture and its ongoing influence on hip hop, dancehall and dance music.” The way we see it, these Culture Clash events are an opportunity for the rest of the music world to catch up to reggae and dancehall in the field of DJ-driven entertainment, and to see what they’ve been missing if they’ve never been to a true sound clash—which are centered on crowd interaction and have a whole different (and livelier) energy than a technical skills-oriented DJ battle.
The last edition of the RBMA Culture Clash, at Roseland in NYC, was definitely one for the history books, with surprise guests including everyone from 2 Chainz and Raekwon to Screechy Dan and house music siren Robyn S. Now it’s Miami’s turn, and, with the city’s rich history of club music, from disco to Miami Bass, we couldn’t think of a better place to take the format. Holding down reggae and dancehall at the first-ever Miami edition of the RBMA Culture Clash is a tag-team venture of South Florida’s top Jamaican sounds: the veteran force Black Chiney (a/k/a Supa Dups, Walshy Fire, Willy Chin, Bobby Chin and Brandon Lee) and their youthful heir apparents, Eccentrix Sound. Together they’ll be representing for Jamaican music against DJ Craze’s Slow Roast Records crew, Dave Nada and DJ Sabo’s Moombahton Massive and dubstep ambassadors Basshead Music.
The event takes place Thursday night, Oct. 24, at Grand Central Miami at 10 pm. Tickets are available for $15 in advance (buy here) or $20 at the door, but RBMA has given us two pairs of tickets to give away.
