While filming our Music of Barbados video series last summer, LargeUp made a link with one Jus D., part of a crop of young artists and songwriters pushing Bajan soca forward. Jus D., who has written and produced songs for some of his island’s biggest names including Rupee and Alison Hinds, has taken up the flag of “future soca” on his own recordings, informing his tracks with touches of dancehall, Afrobeats and other electronic sounds. With this year’s Crop Over season in full swing, Jus D. delivers “9,” a Barbados 2017 track closer in spirit to Popcaan and Konshens’ melodic dancehall than the rum-drinking anthems of Barbados’ King Bubba FM or the island’s aggressively 90’s-inspired bashment soca sound.
