This weekend is the 21st edition of Rebel Salute, the music festival founded in 1993 by artist Tony Rebel. That was an important time for the artist known for classics like “Fresh Vegetable.” It saw the release of his first (and only) major label album, the Columbia release Vibes of the Time.

Around this time Rebel appeared on BET, in a laidback, naturalistic segment that has turned up on YouTube. In it, Rebel explains what a singjay is (“a deejay with a difference”), delivers a message to the people of South Africa, and performs an a capella version of his tune “Know Jah.” Definitely a cool time capsule look into the original reggae revival led by artists such as Rebel, Garnet Silk and Luciano in the early ’90s.
