Words by Jesse Serwer—
Bristol, England-based Mr. Benn’s upcoming album Shake a Leg (out July 15 via London’s Nice Up Records) features staples of U.K. bashment culture like Tenor Fly, Top Cat, Serocee and the Ragga Twins, ‘longside various folks Chicago’s MC Zulu and singer Eva Lazarus. Sonically, the album pulls from reggae, dancehall, UK dance sounds and hip-hop.
Ahead of the release, Benn is letting loose a non-album track featuring deejay BlackoutJA (who also appears on the album). With its uptempo rhythm and Blackout’s Gargamel-esque vocals, “Run Come” could easily pass for vintage Buju. “I made this 90s dancehall influenced riddim a while back, and when I gave it to my long time collaborator Blackout JA he absolutely smashed it with some pure sunshine vibes delivered in his trademark unique gruffness,” Benn says. This is definitely one for the summer cookout—pure, upful vibes.
