In April, we had the pleasure of chatting with Nyla Thorbourne, one half of the Miami-based dancehall/pop sister duo, Brick & Lace. After changing the spelling of her name (from Nailah), she launched her solo career, separate from her sister Nyanda, and gave us an exclusive listen to her first single “Stand Up,” released on Ky-mani Marley’s label, Konfrontation Muzik. The catchy tune (produced by Corey Chase and Mucka Hill), which has an R&B vibe and some fairly obvious sexual innuendos in the lyrics, has now been followed up with an equally sexy video.

This week Rihanna made headlines while attending Crop Over, Barbados’s annual carnival festivities. At first the media attributed her silver, glitter leotard and on-all-fours wuk up activities to typical, wanton Rihanna shenanigans. However, quickly, reporters realized that Bad Girl Riri’s sequined bikinis and feather headrests were really a typical part of the Bajan festival.

Roots, Rockstars, Reggae: Bob Marley Tribute at the Grammys

2013 Grammy Awards

Last week, Beyonce repped hard for Caribbean music when she hit the stage at the Super Bowl so we were hyped to hear that the Grammys would be following suit with a tribute to the one and only Bob Marley, who would have turned 68 last week (Here’s how we celebrated it). While we were thinking that reggae is having a serious and well-deserved moment in popular culture, the tribute featuring Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna, Ziggy and Damian Marley fell a little short of expectations.
