Phone Tap: Deejay Theory Remixes Chan Dizzy’s “Calling All Girls”

chan-dizzy-calling-all-girls

Dutty Artz, the Brooklyn-based label behind releases from Jahdan Blakkamoore, DJ/Rupture and others, dropped Chan Dizzy’s “Calling All Girls” earlier this year, as a preview of the forthcoming collaborative LP between NY producers Matt Shadetek and Robzilla. This week the label drops a full EP of remixes for the Robzilla-produced track, including a predictably fuego version from our own Deejay Theory that blends the driving arrangements of mid-aughts dancehall (dramatic synth stabs, cell phone chirps) and something more modern and moombahton-y.

Stream Theory’s remix below, and pre-order the EP (also featuring mixes from Kush Arora, Samrai and Love Taps) here via Bandcamp or iTunes.

Some fresh and energetic self-described “raggatronic” business from brand new Brooklyn collective We Chief featuring big vocals from JA killer Da Professor. As you may know, the borough of Brooklyn has long been a hotbed of converging cultures, styles and of course music, and for this combination we get an electronic gallis anthem complete with elements of ragga, soca, dancehall and moombahton with a carnival pulse. Definitely look out for more bangers from this team soon.

Send Fi Di Hacksaw: Green Lantern + Craze Combine on “Rocket Launcher”

Words by Deejay Theory —

1000000_768761676486073_429284408_n

Lawdamercy… Blasting off today courtesy of Miami don DJ Craze and the folks at his Slow Roast Records camp, we have this badman collab with heavyweight hip-hop don Green Lantern flipping an assortment of different sound killing techniques that are murdering the dance right now. On the first hand you have the obvious samples of Cutty Ranks’ classics “Wait de Man” and “Limb by Limb” all nicely chopped up, from the dem bow drum breaks to the iconic vocals. Add some punishing 808 bass, steady hand claps and moombahton-esque synth stabs, and you have a big bumboclaat bomb to drop on an unsuspecting dancefloor.

Ticket Giveaway: Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash Miami

Words by LargeUp Crew, Photo by Kevin Ornelas—

trouble-and-bass-red-bull-culture-clash

For the past few years, Red Bull Music Academy has been organizing sound clashes pitting DJ crews from multiple genres against one another, in an annual “celebration of sound system culture and its ongoing influence on hip hop, dancehall and dance music.” The way we see it, these Culture Clash events are an opportunity for the rest of the music world to catch up to reggae and dancehall in the field of DJ-driven entertainment, and to see what they’ve been missing if they’ve never been to a true sound clash—which are centered on crowd interaction and have a whole different (and livelier) energy than a technical skills-oriented DJ battle.
