LargeUp TV: Bunji Garlin “Differentology” Live With The Roots

Words by Michellee Nelson~Bunji Garlin live with The Roots LargeUp

Brooklyn Bowl mash up! The Viking of Soca, Bunji Garlin, joined The Roots (!) and the LargeUp crew for a performance of his hit song “Differentology” at Monday night’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam. For many in the audience, it was their first taste of soca music, and we’re certain it won’t be their last, especially with “Differentology” blazing up the airwaves across the East Coast.

With help from his wife, Trini soca star Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez on backing vocals (and Mr. Vegas, handling MC duties after performing “Heads High,” plus dancer extraordinaire Miss Likklebit) Bunji turnt Brooklyn Bowl all the way up, freestyling over the Roots interpretation of the “Differentology” riddim, and showing us just why he has one of the most popular soca tunes of the year.

You might know Red Fox best from old-school classics like “Pose Off” with Screechy Dan, “Bashment Party” with Rayvon, and “Down in Jamaica” with Naturalee, but the Brooklyn deejay has definitely stayed current current. In fact, he’s been quite prolific of late, dropping “Love Mi Jamaica” with longtime collaborator (and former Ruff Entry Crew cohort) Shaggy, and his own solo tune, “Soulja,” which we premiered right here in May. And look out for his new mixtape, Fiyah Fox, presented by Safari Sound and LargeUp, right here shortly.

LargeUp TV: MissLikkleBit’s Hilltop Bounce

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo and Video by Martei Korley—

If you’ve been to dancehall parties in New York, or ever tried to learn how to Bruk It Down, you may have come across our friend, MissLikkleBit. You may have also caught her choreography live on stage during one of Major Lazer’s insane live shows. The diminutive, Jamaica-born dynamo, who has amassed nearly 2 million views for her astounding interpretation of Mr. Vegas’ latest hit, is one of the most talented dancehall dancers we know. You’d never know it from her humble demeanor, though, which flies in great contrast to most of her contemporaries.
