Jungle and drum and bass music first developed in the UK in the early 1990s via remixes of tunes from Cutty Ranks and other dancehall acts of the day. So it’s no surprise that, as jungle continues to make its return — and reggae and dancehall are more prominent than ever — that today’s jungle DJs and remixers are returning to the genre’s roots by remixing today’s reggae and dancehall artists.
One act making this a specialty are Riddim Punks, a Bristol, U.K. outfit who recently added their touch to Chronixx’s “Sell My Gun.” U.K. punk-reggae outfit The Skints released their latest album, Swimming Lessons, via the Mr Bongo label in April, and to keep the project’s momentum going they’ve connected with Riddim Punks for a remix EP featuring jungle remixes of several tracks off the album. Here, we’ve got a premiere of one of those tracks, “Restless” featuring Protoje.
“We’re stoked that Riddim Punks have done a remix for ‘Restless’ — they have done some serious mashups on some BIG reggae bangers, so it’s super cool that we have one!” says Josh Waters Rudge of the Skints. “Plus we used to love going crazy to jungle as teenagers and this one kicks!”
