Mixtape Mondays: DJ Anil NMS, Mighty Bass Sound, GabSoul

Words by DJ Arems

With Crop Over in Barbados and Caribana in Toronto both coming to a close today, we bring you a gang of new mixes to help you get over that imminent case of Carnival Tabanca.

DJ Anil NMS, Cropover Calling 2017: This week marks the culmination of Crop Over in Barbados, as the celebrations that began in June slowly wind down. Today, however, is Kadooment Day, the climax of the entire celebration and a national holiday where you’ll find costumed bands feting in the streets for the biggest party of the year. Florida’s DJ Anil NMS helps us ring in the Kadooment Finale with this mix of the latest Barbadian soca, from Lil Rick, Leadpipe & Saddis, Jus D. and more, for a power-packed soca explosion. Put this one on and your hips will automatically begin to tic toc like clockwork. Stream below:

Mighty Bass Sound, The King of Mixtape Vol. 9: Italy’s Mighty Bass Sound have been steady dropping mixtapes for over a decade. In particular, their King of Mixtape series has consistently showcased the latest dancehall and reggae heat. Having peeped quite a few mixes in this series, Volume 9 stands out as one of my favorites. The customary intro dubplate proclaiming Mighty Bass as mixtape kings kicks off this mix into a wicked reggae section, slowly moving into dancehall and all biggest chunes blasting out speakers in 2017. Stream and download below:

GabSoul, Riddim & Soul Vol. 3: It took us a minute to get to this one but GabSoul’s Riddim & Soul Vol. 3 is not to be overlooked. This is not your run-of-the-mill soca mixtape but rather a carefully-crafted mix of soulful soca that highlights some of the best music out of Trinidad lately (Voice’s “Far From Finished,” etc.), blended with some soca classics (from David Rudder, et. al). There’s also a secondary focus on the female role in Carnival and soca. The selections on this mix take you on a journey and some of the different edits and mixes featured add even more flavor to an already fantastic mixtape. Stream below:
