Doubles Tabanca: The Bunji Garlin Spoofs Continue

Words by LargeUp Crew—

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and, in the case of soca viking Bunji Garlin, at this point it certainly rings true. Initially inspired by a frequently misheard “Differentology” lyric, parodies of Bunji’s 2013 and 2014 contributions have kept coming, including the hilarious “Cow on D Road”  spoof by DJ Righteous. It’s not all jokes, though: A$AP Ferg recently released his version of “Carnival Tabanca” called “Petit Valley,” paying homage to both Trinidad and its beautiful women.

But for the Livin’ Local TV crew, it seems as though one element of Trinidadian culture was missing from this comic stew: Doubles! Riffing on Bunji’s “Carnival Tabanca” webumentary, Livin’ Local’s Aaron Fingal takes us down a culinary memory lane in his “Doubles Tabanca” parody, getting emotional about his first encounter with the “Indo-Trinidadian delicacy,” and its undeniable prominence in Trinidadian Culture (and referencing Trinidad James’ own doubles tribute). The video might be meant to elicit laughs and giggles, but anyone who has had the privilege of indulging in the popular street food would most likely attest to the value he places on it.

Watch “Doubles Tabanca” but, before you do, make sure you’re up to speed with “Carnival Tabanca,” for the full comedic effect.
