Photos and Words by DJ Gravy

In New York City, the West Indian Day Parade is always guaranteed to be a feast for the senses. The Caribbean community comes out in an epic show of force in the melting pot that is Crown Heights. The West Indian Day Parade is a cornucopia of sounds, flavors and people spills into the streets adjacent to Eastern Parkway, with crowds topping 2 million. This year was no different. LargeUp’s own DJ Gravy brought his camera and this is what he saw…

Everybody brings their own self expression to the road, a customized combination of both traditional and personalized identity…

The anticipation of the next truck coming, the ocean of people, it’s like a wave approaching, about to break right in front of you

Sometimes while at this enormous festivity, it’s hard not to think about all the different people from different places, how we can all interact and celebrate ourselves and each others cultures at the same damn time

It’s really hard to have a bad time at the West Indian Day Parade

Dude is proudly reppin the US and the islands, respect, but can we bring our attention to the turquoise-camo durag for a sec?!

Cops had their own parade…

When we come dung, the whole place shell dung

Police in helicopter…

Vibes caan dun…

Eyes can tell a million words, no wait… a picture can, you know

Certain countries like Costa Rica are always there, but you may or may not catch em being represented.

So what did you do over summer break? Anything interesting?

Go big or go home

As you walked, the wafting smells varied from clouds of jerk smoke to weed smoke, to more jerk smoke, then more weed smoke…

Haiti always goes so hard on the Parkway, this year was no exception

That moment when you realize you waited all year for this

Street styles on the Parkway were infinite…

Vibes

Jerk smoke, weed smoke, jerk smoke, weed smoke, a feast for the senses…

King of Grenada, maybe…
