Roots reggae artist Duane Stephenson is exploring a different throwback sound in his newest video, “Cool Runnings”—vintage dancehall, by way of Bunny Wailer. The track, off Stephenson’s upcoming LP, Dangerously Roots, puts a classic yet fresh spin on Bunny Wailer’s rub-a-dub classic of the same name. “Dancehall nice again,” according to Stephenson’s opening lines—and the Ras Kassa-directed video showcases that, with shots of vinyl and cassettes, PG-13 dancing, and Red Stripe, instead of laptops, daggering, and apple vodka. This mellower take on dancehall culture fits Stephenson’s crooning to a T—and he even sports a mesh marina to complete the retro ambience.
