LargeUp Premiere: Watch Karbon Get “Light Like A Feather” 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲

For his second single under Yaadcore’s 12 Yaad Records and Delicious Vinyl Island, Jamaica’s Karbon returns to a familiar topic: Praising the herb. We first met the Manchester-raised, Kingston-based singer in 2019 when he came through with “Highgrade Maka,” a hypnotic ganja tune over the beat from Tekno’s now-classic afrobeats smash, “Pana.” Lyrically, “Light Like A Feather” sees the singer on an even deeper meditation, as he celebrates the feminine energy of the herb.

“Light Like A Feather” dropped as a single in February, boasting production from Yaadcore himself, an instrumental featuring such notables as Danny Bassie and Dean Fraser, and a mixdown by Bulby York. The rhythm track itself is a modern-day remake of the all-time classic M16 riddim, also known as the Scandal riddim, after songs recorded by Lone Ranger and U-Roy, respectively. (Lone Ranger’s “M16” being the best known track on the beat, although U-Roy’s “Scandal” predates it by about a decade, and Lone Ranger’s track is itself an adaptation of Sammy Dread’s “Rude Boy A Fire M16”).

For the video, Karbon travels to the bountiful fields of Westmoreland, the mecca of Jamaican ganja, with a detour to the South Coast’s Treasure Beach for a frolic on the sand with his empress. The intent of the video, directed by Fernando Hevia, is to illustrate how marijuana can be an elixir for romance and love, Karbon explains.

“The single promotes the feeling of the divine feminine energy; Ma’at, the feather of Truth, through meditation and spiritual alignment via the utilization of marijuana,” Karbon says, “reminding us to use and not abuse the herb.”

The video, he says, “shows cool and easy vibrations to bring the essence of being light like a feather.”
