LargeUp TV: Half Way Tree, Kingston Reacts to Jamaica’s 4×100-meter World Record

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photos and Video by Martei Korley—

The Jamaican team of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter ran the 4 x 100-meter sprint in 36.84 seconds, beating the previous world record, and capping an unprecedented run of domination in men’s track events at this year’s Olympics. LargeUp was in the middle of the action at Half Way Tree, Kingston—Jamaica’s Times Square—as thousands of Jamaicans crammed the streets, blocking traffic and/or climbing atop storefronts, to cheer, scream and vuvuzela their countrymen on, as the race played out on two big screens. The scene was chaotic, loud and colorful—just as you’d expect from a country celebrating, quite possibly, its best week ever. Watch the video and click through for photos below.
