Visual Culture: Irie Myrie

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

When he’s not repressing classic dancehall 45s on his Gold Shop label, respected colleague Dan K. is parring with elder Brooklyn statesmen like Irie Myrie, the go-to flyer designer for New York’s dancehall events in the early 90s, back when shit was good.  If the words Stone Love, Ninjaman and Afrique Soundstation mean anything to you, you know what we’re on about.  The names on the bill read like Marvel Universe handbook and Mr. Myrie gave that vibe it’s visual dimension with an aesthetic that was half hiphop photocopy collage and half psychedelic rock poster, all electrified with a palette of oranges, pinks, purples and bumba-reds. Check a few of the exclusive Myrie gems Dan passed us below and find more graphic design in the reggaematical vein on his blog.
