LargeUp Presents Reggae Thursdays at the Surf Lodge in Montauk

Words by LargeUp Crew

Located past the Hamptons in Long Island’s East End, Montauk has been called one of the world’s best surf towns by Surfer Magazine and National Geographic, among others. The L.A. Times compares it to Malibu in the ’60s.

And wherever there’s surfing, reggae is close by: Jamaican music has been the favored soundtrack of waveriders for as long as surf culture, and reggae, has existed. LargeUp has teamed with The Surf Lodge — New York’s “coolest music venue”, and the place that turned Montauk into a nightlife hotspot —  to present live performances from some of our favorite reggae and dancehall artists on Thursday nights for the rest of the summer. No cover bands here, strictly di real ting.

After a preview in July with the original queen of dancehall Sister Nancy, LargeUp Presents Reggae Thursdays at the Surf Lodge officially kicked off last week with “Mr. Burrups,” Nardo Ranks. And for this week’s show, we’ve got the one Screechy Dan. You’ve heard him sing about the girls passing by in their pum pum shorts, you’ve heard rappers like Foxy Brown shout him out, you’ve read his story on LargeUp. Screechy is also one certified top-notch performer, hailing from the days when artists really had to come with a show, or face the music. Ever heard anyone else yodel at a reggae show?

Catch this Brooklyn legend live, backed by the Skadanks, and the backdrop of a beautiful lake in one of the best surf towns in America tomorrow night starting at 6pm. And if you can’t make it, we’ll be back next week (8/18) with another sunset session featuring one of reggae music’s top rising stars, Jesse Royal, followed by ’80s dancehall pioneers and husband/wife duo Carlton Livingston and Lady Ann, on Aug. 25th, and the brilliant and eclectic No-maddz on Sept. 1st.

All shows are free!

Here’s the full schedule:

Aug. 11: Screechy Dan with the Skadanks
Aug. 18: Jesse Royal
Aug. 25: Carlton Livingston and Lady Ann with the Skadanks
Sept. 1: No-maddz
