Mixtape Mondays: DJ Krysis, Lady X x Willy Wonka, DJ Arems x DJ Hoppa

Words by DJ Arems

This week we head over to Grenada for Spicemas, get a lesson in Trap vs Soca and party with the Way Up Wednesday crew in Vancity. Non-stop heat to keep your summer steaming.

DJ Krysis, Spicemas Soca Sampler 2016: The Carnival celebrations continue in the Caribbean this week with all roads leading to Grenada for Spicemas today and tomorrow. Of course, soca is the music of choice when it comes to Jouvert morning and there’s a lot of top-notch soca coming out of Grenada right now. DJ Krysis has put together a wicked mix of the biggest chunes for Spicemas this year and while you may not be familiar with all the artists on the playlist, there’s no denying the quality of the music. Non-stop jump-up chunes, skillfully mixed, will definitely have you moving something. Stream below:

DJ Lady X & DJ Willy Wonka, TRAPSOCA : If you’ve ever been to a club night where they play both trap and soca, it’s almost guaranteed the party was LIT. The energy that comes with trap music is similar to that of soca. Although the messages are completely different, both are heavily dance-driven and the tempos work well together, with soca basically double timing trap beats. Lady X and Willy Wonka have gathered the hottest trap from the East to West coasts and everywhere in between, and fused it with the biggest Soca chunes out of Barbados, Trinidad, et. al. This mix is over 90 minutes long and takes a second to get into the soca, but once it hits you’ll see how similar the two genres are. Stream and download below:

DJ Arems X DJ Hoppa, Way Up Wednesdays Vol 1: Way Up Wednesdays has been a monthly party in Vancouver for almost a year now, and has just now become a weekly. To celebrate the party’s success, DJ Hoppa and myself, DJ Arems,  have put out this mix to get you familiar with what’s in store if you pass through. Packed with all the biggest dancehall, reggae and afro chunes for Summer 16 plus all your favorite Golden Era throwbacks, this one should have you covered for the rest of the summer! Stream below.
