LargeUp Premiere: Lucas DiPasquale feat. Popcaan — “No Talking”

Popcaan and Lucas DiPasquale have formed an unusual alliance. DiPasquale became famous in Jamaica overnight when Popcaan tweeted out a link of the Canadian singer performing an unplugged medley of Fry Yiy’s own hits, nailing the dancehall deejay’s thick patois in spite of his being a Canadian kid with an Italian surname strumming a guitar in a college dorm room. Since then, DiPasquale has traveled several times to Jamaica, joining Popcaan onstage during his performance at Dream Weekend 2014, and making an unexpected foray into legit dancehall with “Make My Rounds” on E5 Records’ Beach Life riddim. He’s also collaborated with Konshens, Stylo G and Kardinal Offishall, with “Do It Like.”

Now, he and Popcaan have teamed for their first official collaboration in “No Talking,” from Lucas’ upcoming Post-Secondary EP. The track blends DiPasquale’s chill-dude-in-the-coffee-shop vibe with Popcaan’s unruly dancehall style, over a touch-all-the-bases mixture of squealing Ibiza-ready synths, Showtime riddim “Hey!” sounds, and trap drums. Of course, Lucas can’t resist flexing a little patois again, echoing Popcaan’s words on the bridge and singing “No talking inna di club” on the hook.

Check the track below, read our interview with Lucas here, and watch our webisode “A Day in the Life with Popcaan” here.
