LargeUp Premiere: Stream Toian’s “Love It”

Words by Jesse Serwer

Toian is one of the more intriguing young female artists out of Jamaica right now. Mixing a cool, understated vocal style (think of a more laid-back, Jamaican-accented Rihanna) with vintage reggae riddims, she’s shown her diversity through collaborations with both Protoje and Vybz Kartel, and cultivated an online following through her own singles, “Rude Boys” and “Kingston Town.” Throw in a distinctive visual presentation (close cropped hair, vintage aviators, cartoon graphics), and it’s easy to see why she appeared near the top of our Artists to Watch list for 2015, alongside such names as Joey Bada$$ and Kali Uchis.

The opening track on Toian’s upcoming debut EP, Retrospect (out March 17th through Class One Music) “Love It” follows the moody vibes of “Rude Boys” and “Kingston Town” with something more upbeat. Over notes borrowed from the foundation riddim My Conversation, Toian delivers another anthem for good girls who like rude boys, while the mellow rocksteady melody and dubby vocal filters create a vibe fit for a Sunday afternoon. Stream “Love It” below, buy it here, and visit us tomorrow for DJ/producer EchoSlim’s interview with Toian.
