LargeUp Premiere: DJ EFN, Smif N Wessun, Kardinal Offishall + Spragga Benz — “Fiyah Gun”

Words by Jesse Serwer

DJ EFN is known for being one of the cornerstone figures in Miami’s underground rap scene. More recently, he’s also become a filmmaker, with Coming Home, a documentary about his experience returning to his native Cuba to interact with the local hip-hop community there. That film (which recently aired on Revolt TV) is now being turned into a movie series featuring other members of his culturally diverse Crazy Hood crew, with future projects set in Peru and Haiti.

The DJ/producer is set to drop his debut “solo” album, Another Time, on March 3rd, and by “solo album” we mean he’s put together an all-star cast of hip-hop luminaries from across the South (Trick Daddy, Juvenile, Scarface, Killer Mike), East Coast (Talib Kweli, M.O.P., Redman, DJ Premier), Midwest (Royce da 5’9″, Black Milk) and the West (Kurupt, MC Eiht, Ras Kass), as well as a handful of up-and-coming MCs like Miami’s Denzel Curry and NYC’s Your Old Droog.

As an island bwoy from one of the USA’s most Caribbean cities, EFN also knows the necessity of adding some Jamaican/reggae/dancehall flavor to the mix. “Fiyah Gun” features Brooklyn’s Smif N Wessun, Toronto’s Kardinal Offishall, top shotta Spragga Benz and newcomer Bittah Sosicaka, over a bashment-ready track with a very familiar sample (Recognize it?) Check the world premiere right here:

And “Fiyah Gun” isn’t the only track on Another Time with some yardie flavor: “Warrior” features Sizzla Kalonji alongside N.O.R.E., David Banner and Jon Connor. Stream “Warrior” here, and keep up with EFN and his projects here.
