Words by Jesse Serwer—
Back in 2009, when Mixpak Records head Dre Skull had just stuck up a partnership with the Werl’ Boss, producing and releasing the dancehall star’s “Yuh Love” (a collaboration that led to their full-length Kingston Story project the following year), the label dropped this white tee featuring a purple-hued visage of the dancehall superstar. Four years later, a lot has changed in both Kartel and Mixpak’s worlds, but the shirt, which Mixpak has just made available again, still looks fly.
The purple face turned out to be a savvy move, considering Kartel’s ever-changing skin tone, pre-empting discussion of whether the tee should depict Kartel with his original dark brown complexion, or the yellow hue he took on in his skin-bleaching years.
