Fresh out of high school, a bright-eyed, 18-year-old Lisa Hanna copped not only the coveted Miss Jamaica title, but the Miss World Caribbean and Miss World 1993 titles too. After sweeping the judges off their feet in South Africa, she tried her hand at acting with a small role in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and later worked in broadcast journalism, hosting the Our Voices talk show with former dancehall queen and close friend Carlene Smith. Today the pageant queen-cum-politician serves as Jamaica’s Youth and Culture Minister, and she only seems to be getting hotter with time. Is that even possible, you ask? Think beauty plus brains, a regal air, impeccable style and an unmistakeable je ne sais quois. No Jamaican has won Miss World since she did, and every hopeful since her reign is compared to her. ‘Nuff said.
