My Conversation: Watch the Trailer for New Bunny Lee Documentary “I Am the Gorgon”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

At one time, Bunny Lee was the most prolific producer in the world, cranking out hit after hit through his Lee’s and Jackpot labels.

The subject of a recent autobiography by Noel Hawks and Jah Floyd, the reggae pioneer (whose notable creations include the eternally classic My Conversation riddim, originally sourced for the Slim Smith and the Uniques’ tune of the same name) is the focus of a new documentary, dubbed I am the Gorgon, and the cast of figures interviewed for the movie is a testament to the man’s influence. Virtually every surviving notable figure from reggae’s early years is represented: Lee “Scratch” Perry, Max Romeo, Dillinger, Sly and Robbie, Derrick Morgan, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Johnny Clarke, Horace Andy, Aston “Family Man” Barrett, Earl “Chinna” Smith, and that’s just a few. Talk about no stone left unturned. As far as music documentaries go, this one looks like a sure shot.

Check out the preview, narrated by deejay Dennis Alcapone, below, and look out for the real thing coming this fall.
