Socanomics: Wine Yuh Waist with Miss Black USA

Words by Emily Shapiro—

Large Up friend and supporter Selena Bailey Watkins has a lot going on. The smart and beautiful Watkins, whose parents both hail from Antigua, is the reigning Miss Black USA, and the first Antiguan-American to hold that title. She’s been repping her role hard in 2013, speaking to young women all over about empowerment and following their dreams, while representing her West Indian culture as well.

Selena also happens to be a talented and accomplished dancer—as well as a certified trainer and fitness instructor—whose latest mission is spreading fitness through her love of soca. We’ve seen dancehall dancing move from the club to the studio, with a growing number of dancehall-themed workshops spreading from New York to Kingston to Sweden. Now it’s soca’s turn, and Selena is leading the movement with her “Socanomics” workshops in NYC, bringing together a fusion of soca, dancehall and West African movements.

Check out the details for her next workshop, at Mahattan’s Pearl Studio on Feb. 24, on the flyer below, designed by Samantha Walker. Space is limited so jump up and RSVP to Watkins.Selena@gmail.com, if interested. Dweet!
