Words by Jesse Serwer—
Protoje, Chronixx and Kabaka Pyramid are the most hotly tipped names among the new generation of conscious reggae artists rising in Jamaica currently so it’s no surprise that word of a track featuring all three alongside Sizzla would generate some serious hype. While “Selassie Souljahz” isn’t set for release until Feb. 19, Irie Fm’s DJ Wayne—he’s basically Jamaica’s Funkmaster Flex, for all you yanks—dropped it on his radio show this weekend—and the tune, produced by DJ I-vier of California’s Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi, definitely delivers on its promise.
Sizzla, Protoje, Kabaka and Sizzla all operate within the same musical sphere as reggae singjays, but each has such distinct voices and styles that none cancels the other out here. Each man’s part builds on the last one’s vibes, and the chemistry is electric. Stream “Selassie Souljahz” below, and tell us who, if anyone, comes off looking the best from this one—we think they all do—or which upcoming and veteran artists you’d like to hear collaborate next.
