Veteran singer Glen Washington recently issued a new album of soulful reggae tunes with backing band Zion I Kings (made up of members from I Grade, Lustre Kings and Zion High Productions) under the title Masterpiece. Following on the heels of “Fall On Me,” released this summer, “There is a Joy” is the second video from the LP.
Like much of Washington’s work—he once played drums for Stevie Wonder’s band—the song blends reggae with soul in a seamless fashion that recalls Beres Hammond (Washington, who re-emerged in the late ’90s two decades after his first recordings for Joe Gibbs, is also like Hammond in that he peaked deep into his career). The video for “There Is a Joy” follows the same low-key, mellow trajectory as the tune itself. Ketch di premiere here:
