Words by Jesse Serwer—
This week on Mixtape Mondays we’ve got a big big premiere from Major Lazer and Chronixx, the new culture artist who’s been making a big impression in Jamaica and worldwide of late.
LargeUp Premiere: Major Lazer Presents Chronixx x Walshy Fire, Start A Fire: Little known a few months ago, Chronixx is the new artist everyone seems to be talking about in Jamaica and international reggae circles. His music impressed the Major Lazer crew while they were in JA filming their “Get Free” video earlier this year so much that they’ve picked him as the featured artist to launch their new “Major Lazer Presents” series of mixtapes spotlighting up-and-coming talent, spearheaded by Major Lazer MC and LargeUp family member, Walshy Fire.
Start a Fire features Chronixx singing and deejaying over a variety of original and juggling riddims, classic reggae hip-hop instrumentals (including Mad Lion’s “Take It Easy” and the Salaam Remi remix of Super Cat’s “Ghetto Red Hot”) and Major Lazer productions like “Get Free” and Snoop Lion’s “La La La” (a/k/a Ken Boothe’s “Artibella”). It’s definitely a strong work that will be appreciated equally by Chronixx’s fans, and those just hearing him for the first time.
