‘Parking Lot’ Pimpin: Nelly Furtado Goes Dancehall?

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo by Aaron A., via OAccessJamaica

Nelly Furtado spent some time in Jamaica while working on her new album The Spirit Indestructible, collaborating with Stephen “Di Genius”  McGregor on a (deluxe-version only) one-drop track called “Don’t Leave Me.” She also recorded with the legendary Sly and Robbie, at Kingston’s Anchor Studios, for an unrelated project.

The album’s Rodney Jerkins-produced lead single “Parking Lot,” sure to be one of the club anthems of the fall, has also just gotten a dancehall makeover (though we hear some traces of dancehall energy in the original, as well) courtesy of producer The Wizard, who contributes additional vocals to the remix, too. Hear the “Parking Lot (Dancehall Remix)” below, then see how it stacks up against the original in the new video for “Parking Lot” below— and sample the Genius collaboration, “Don’t Leave Me,” after that.
