Visual Culture: Marcus Burrowes’ ‘Sons of Thunder’ Show @ Fuse Gallery

Words by Jesse Serwer—

The work of our friend Marcus Burrowes—visual artist, streetwear pioneer, punky reggae style don, designer of our brand-new LargeUp x RockersNYC “Jamaica” tee —is the subject of a new art show opening at New York’s Fuse Gallery this week. The show, Sons of Thunder, takes its name from a Dr. Alimantado album, and, as with much of Marcus’ work, music is a central theme.

Reflecting his diverse upbringing—geographically he grew up in Kingston, D.C. and Cali, while his cultural outlook was shaped by Rastafari (his mother is a well-known dub poet and Rasta author) and punk rock—images in the show include representations of the Wailers, Peter Tosh and the Beastie Boys, among others. The opening for the show, on display through Oct. 19, is Wednesday night, from 7 to 10 pm. Pree some images from the show below, and read our recent Q+A with Marcus for more on the artist, and his unique style.
