Mixtape Mondays: Project Groundation, Regent Street, Jus Now, Bud E Green

Words by DJ Theory —

Monday is here, which can only mean new mixes to jumpstart your week. This week, conscious roots music meets baile funk, moombahton, dancehall, soca, UK vibes and more, as we touch down in Oakland, Boston, Brookyln, UK, Trinidad and Toronto. Summer may be a memory but as always the vibes cyan done.

DJ Child, Return to the Classics Book 5: Exodus to Genesis: New heat from our friend DJ Child and his Project Groundation Massive. This mix marks volume 5 of his Return to the Classics series, paying tribute to essential vintage material from many seemingly forgotten voices in his deep crates of reggae and roots music. This is a deep piece of work themed towards the birthplace of civilization and repatriation to Africa, with an equally weighty handpainted cover from PGM family Ras Terms. It’s another collab with Northern CA’s Sierra Seeds Co-Op as well, a unique combination of music, farming and food geared towards strengthening mind and body alike. Stream and download 33 of the 55 tracks here, but we recommend copping a real CD here and a limited signed print here.

Regent Street, Fire For Hire Radio Vol. 23 (via Mass Appeal):  We’re treated to some sweaty, sticky baile funk and moombahton this week courtesy of Brooklyn’s Regent Street, who repping Toronto’s Fire For Hire Soundsystem. With Caribbean-manufactured reggae, dancehall, calypso and soca being the primary focus for worldwide Carnival fetes, Kingston-born Regent Street lets it be known with this mix that Brazilian baile funk and moombahton are a welcome and almost necessary ingredient to the equation to really cover your tropical bases. Stream below.

Jus Now, Rise Up 003:  Some blazing soca vibes from UK/Trinidad combination Jus Now. Comprised of producers Interface and Laza Beam, the duo fuse traditional Trinidadian sounds with bass-heavy UK production. The mix includes some exclusive Jus Now originals and edits, which meet soca, dancehall, kuduro, UK bass and funky, and even some jungle, to create a wicked cocktail of new tropical flavors. Stream and download below, more info and tracklist here.

Bud E Green, Ton By Ton: Our New England pal and ganja commissioner Bud E Green is back with a new one, with a ton load of sensimilla-inspired singles, riddims and dubplates. Like with other Bud E’s mixes, it’s mixed live on two turntables with no long talking or excessive drops or sound effects, just straight music. After leading off with the dub of “One by One” by Laza Morgan that gives the tape its name, more big tunes of the moment in reggae and dancehall are blent up with some high grade exclusives and crowd favorites from Bud E’s long-running weekly pon the beach in Wellfleet, Cape Cod every summer. Stream and download below, tracklist here.
