Gaza Some More: Busta Rhymes x Vybz Kartel, “Wine & Go Down”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We like Busta when he’s on his New York shit, we don’t even mind Busta when he’s on his global domination superhero/villain shit, but we really love him when he’s on his Jamaican shit. Ever since he made his debut with Leaders of the New School back in ’91, Trevor Smith has been one of hip-hop’s primary ambassadors for dancehall culture, with his rugged, deejay-inspired flow, and his frequent collaborations with dancehall artists.

And, while other rappers have forgotten dancehall as the market has grown less lucrative, Bus stays interacting with the Jamaican music community, having most recently guested on the official remix to Popcaan’s “Only Man She Want.” That said, “Wine & Go Down,” a collaboration with the currently incacerated Vybz Kartel produced by UK beatmaker Dready, is easily his best and most notable dalliance with dancehall in some time. See what we mean below, and check some footage of Kartel and Busta working in the studio with producer Don Corleon over at Miss Gaza.
