Mixtape Mondays: Assassin, Murlo, The Heatwave, Blessed Coast

Words by DJ Theory—

As we get deeper into winter, Mixtape Mondays is bringing more fire to keep your home, office and iPod nice and warmed up. With a Showtime-heavy mix from JA, a “clean” one from London, some tropical bashy from the UK and icey vibes from the Northwest, here’s plenty of ammo to help you fire through your week.

Assassin, River Stone Buss Dem Head: Our doopses at Federation Sound just linked us this essential new mixtape from Kingston general Assassin, a.k.a Agent Sasco. Each tune on this 63-track mix is voiced over the Showtime riddim: Mixed live in studio, it feels more like a live performance, with Dr. Dre of Rennaissance at the controls, a heap of sound effects, and off-the-top murderation from Sasco and friends from the Boardhouse camp. This is straight 100% dancehall business right here, and a reminder for those who may have forgotten that Assassin is one of the baddest deejays in the world. As Federation put out, “How much Showtime riddim is too much? The answer is NOT 53 minutes… at least not when Assassin is delivering a pretty much non-stop barrage of lyrics from his extensive catalog of hits.” Peep the youtube below to get the full effect, download here.

Murlo, Bombcast Mix: For those looking for some tropical vibes to get you ready for the upcoming carnival season, rising British badman Murlo has a new mix that’s exactly what the doctor ordered. In addition to an already bubbling tracklist of dancehall, soca and British cousins like grime and UK funky, the mix leads off with five of his original and unreleased tunes. The Heatwave, Popcaan mix (via Rinse FM):  Our UK contributor and all around boss Gabriel Heatwave just sent in the latest show from his always quality Rinse FM series.  It’s an all-poppy mix for the Popcaan fans, also serving as a 30 minute intro for those who aren’t up to speed on the artist who is very quickly filling Kartel’s Clarks in the international dancehall superstar department. Stream below, download here.

Blessed Coast, Winter Swag: As the winter season really starts to set in, it’s crucial to keep some blazing hot dancehall nearby to keep things warm regardless of how unholy the temperature may be. Holding things down for the Northwest,  Blessed Coast Sound (Ryan I, Lionize & Triple Crown) got you covered in the heat department with their latest offering, running some big singles and riddims in current dancehall mixed by Ryan I. You won’t need that bubble goose after listening to this one. Stream below, and get the tracklist and download here.
