Words by Jesse Serwer
Due to all of the ensuing madness in Vybz Kartel’s life since then, it’s easy to forget that he released a pretty good album just this past summer in the Dre Skull-produced Mixpak Records release, Kingston Story. But one single from that album, Kartel’s “Half On a Baby” is still gaining legs, now with an official remix featuring Clipse’s Pusha T.
Pusha isn’t someone who immediately springs to people’s minds when they think dancehall, but if you have listened closely to his music over the years, you may have picked up on his command of patois, or the occasional reference to some bashment like Nardo Ranks’ “Burrup.” His fleeting verse on “Half On A Baby” doesn’t have any of that (though he does mention Caribana), sticking with the thug-in-love theme of the single, one of the more humanizing songs in Kartel’s catalog.
