Remember Him: Concert to Honor the Late Joel Chin

Words by Emily Shapiro

VP Records and DJ Norie will host a tribute concert for Joel Chin, the label’s late director of A&R, at BB King’s in New York City on Dec. 14. The “Strictly the Best” event, which is also celebrating the release of the 44th and 45th volumes of the reggae compilation series, will feature performances from Sean Paul, Shaggy, Gyptian, Wayne Marshall and Demarco (whose performance of “Fallen Soldiers” should inevitably be emotional), among others.

Joel Chin was the grandson of Vincent “Randy” Chin, who founded VP, and the son of legendary reggae producer, Clive Chin. A songwriter and producer himself, mixing music for Tarrus Riley and many others, Chin was also responsible for signing some of VP’s biggest talents including Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder and Beenie Man. Chin was truly a major asset to the genre of reggae music but was tragically killed in front of his home this past summer in Jamaica.

VP artists will perform to celebrate his contributions and talents, and donations will be made in his honor. Check the flyer for details.
