Mixtape Mondays: Poirier, Favi x DJ Santero, Claire Darrow Mosier

Words by DJ Theory

Big league business meets up-and-coming talent, East meets West, worlds and genres collide—it must be Mixtape Mondays. This week, Canada, NYC, the Bay and beyond find their way into the mix, each providing different flavors to peppa your week. Leggo.

Poirier, Jet Lag (via Aritzia): Montreal’s Ghislain Poirier, or simply Poirier, is known the world over for shaking bassbins and borders via his original tunes, remixes, DJ sets and mixes like this tropical bad boy right here. This new Jet Lag mix was cooked up for Aritzia, a womens clothing boutique that’s also had a hand in bringing you some top notch DJ mixes on the side. Poirier, who’s signed to Ninja Tune Records and clearly has a wide appreciation for music, approached this mix with signature style, connecting the dots between a mixed bag of genres from collaborators and artists around the world. Dancehall, UK funky, soca, grime and huge sleepers like this work their way into this bubbling uptempo mix. Download, stream and more info here.

Favi x DJ Santero, Flor De Azahar: San Francisco’s Favi has a long history in samba and flamenco music, and turned some heads on a global level recently with her feature on Los Rakas’ 2010 hit “Abrazame,” which, appropriately, sets off this mix. That song is such a sure shot, it’s never failed me once on the dancefloor and Favi definitely put the extra touch on the track. In conjunction with SF DJ/Producer DJ Santero, the 21-year-old has just compiled and recorded her debut mixtape Flor De Azahar (“Orange Blossom”), covering reggae, cumbia, flamenco, r&b and hip hop to help you get more familiar with this sassy bi-lingual singer/rapper straight from Frisco. Santero hit me recently to say Favi touched Jahdan’s Blakkamoore’s single “Quick Money” (produced by yours truly), but what he didn’t tell me is that she completely put her stamp on it by covering and re-interpreting Jahdan’s original. With the new year approaching, expect to see a whole lot more from Favi in 2012. Stream and download here.

Claire Darrow Mosier, Sound Advice 118: We had to wrap things up with some reggae for good measure. This week it’s courtesy of an unlikely source: Claire Darrow Mosier, creative director for Andre Balazs Properties, the company behind some of the world’s choicest hotels, including The Standard. Not certain if she’s a DJ or not, but the sometimes Costa Rica resident clearly has a fondness for early dancehall and rockers music and picks out some timeless bits. I guess it’s not too leftfield of a guest for the already very eclectic Sound Advice mix series, this particular edition being spotted from the folks over in Germany at Seen.  BTW Claire, anytime you need a house-sitter in Costa Rica just say the word and we’ll kindly lend a hand… Download here, more info here.
