Mixtape Mondays: Tribe Of Kings, DJ Stakz Hi-Profyle, Zulu

Words by DJ Theory

Alright, I’m back on land and back to work here, ready to drop on you another breezy chapter of Mixtape Mondays. This week we have some big mixes and global heat from San Diego, London and back to NYC. Gear up.

Tribe Of Kings x Delly Ranx, Toppa Top:  San Diego’s undisputed champion sound Tribe Of Kings (Dash Eye, Peril, Jester, Unite & Rashi) are back with another big win, this time in combo with SD medical marijuana dispensary the Firehouse Collective and one of the fiercest artists in reggae and dancehall today, Mr. Delly Ranx.  Responsible for a slew of heavyweight mixes over the years including 2010’s Got To Be Strong with J Boog, Tribe Of Kings are always lookin’ out for the people, and are back to share this new mix showcasing some of singer/producer Ranx’s diverse catalog. Mixed in fine style by selecta Dash Eye, Toppa Top features a cool 50 tracks from Delly and a handful of his JA compadres like Chino, Buju, Sizzla, Wayne Marshall, his new tune ‘longside Collie Buddz, Gappy Ranks and Russian and a bag of other big tunes and riddims.  Download here, more info here.

DJ Stakz Hi-Profyle, Zouk Sou Bon Bon (via Cutlass & Cane):  Direct from Haiti and the French Antilles we have some more zouk vibez on Mixtape Mondays courtesy of Brooklyn’s DJ Stakz Hi-Profyle. The last zouk mix we featured was some futuristic ish from LA tropical duo Nguzunguzu, but Stakz takes a more traditional approach blending up 30+ zouk and kompa tunes. Our French speakers will have the most luck with this one, but this music can really appeal to a broad range of listeners. If anything it should be a breath of fresh air for those looking for something a little different in their mixtape roundups. Download here, more info here.

Zulu, Zulu Mixtape Vol 1: 18-year-old London producer Zulu has just released a mixtape of all original material, and simply put I’m rather stoked that he did. Recently signed to tropical bass don Toddla T’s Girls Music label, Zulu is set to make some serious noise this year with his self-proclaimed Zimbabwean trance sound and upcoming EP dropping November 7th.  The African zulu elements are clear as day, as well as bits of UK funky & 2 step, house, and that good good future club that can’t be put into a box as it lacks a specific shape.  Whether or not this is a sound or style you’re used to, adding this mix to your life is highly recommended. Download here.
