Fete Week: Caribbean Week Takes Over NY

Words by Jesse Serwer

As a LargeUp reader you already know Caribbeans run New York but next week Manhattan will become even more of an island. Caribbean Week NY, organized by the Caribbean Tourism Organization, brings six days worth of networking and cultural events to the city from Monday through Saturday. Among the events will be the Caribbean Tales New York Showcase, a program of Caribbean movies organized by Trini-Canadian director Frances-Anne Solomon. The Saturday event at Brooklyn College’s Spike Lee Screening Room will screen Stevan Riley’s brilliant cricket documentary Fire In Babylon and the calypso documentary Calypso Dreams.

Also part of the program is the Caribbean International Fashion Show, at Manhattan’s Arena Gallery on Wednesday (read our preview here) and the Caribbean Media Awards at the Marriott Marquee. Chefs Paul Yellin (Barbados), author of book on cooking with rum; Yvette James (Grenada), a former personal chef for Naomi Campbell; and Roland Brammer (Jamaica) will give Caribbean cooking demonstrations at Bloomingdales in Midtown, on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, respectively. See you there.
