Africa Caribe: Mongo Santamaria x Joe Claussell

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Fania has been doing their thing lately as far as dragging their untouchable credibility for old school salsa into the new millenium with remixes and cool collaborations. The latest example is the Hammock House: Africa Caribe project with house spiritualist Joaquin “Joe” Claussell of Dance Trax fame. “Mambo Mongo” is a perfect example of how impactful the Afro-Caribbean percussion of New York’s latin scene–embodied here by Cuban-born legend Mongo Santamaria–was on the formation of the riddim-driven musical era we currently live in.
