Back to the Future: Fambo Resurgence

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

One of our favorite deejay personalities and oversize yoots about town, Future Fambo has been making a bit of a resurgence lately. Hardcore dancehall fans will remember Fambo from his 90s throwback hit “Kung Fu” on the Corduroy riddim, released under his original name Future Troubles, a hilarious wild card of a concept record in the same pack that contained Beenie’s “World Dance” and Louie Culture’s “Ganga Lee.” But behind the scenes, the rechristened Fambo has been not only recording his own joints but also ghostwriting the funniest verses delivered by your other favorite Jamaican artists.

It feels like the creativity and grindication might be about to pay off with a Mr. Lexx-style comeback for the Kung Fu master, judging from his new collabo with Beenie “I’m OK/Drinking Rum” (see the official video below) and rumors that he will be tapped to provide the voice for the Major Lazer character on the official Cartoon Network show of the same name (oh yes, it’s happening). As Fambo told the Jamaica Star last week after an auspicious phone audition: “You know the Major Lazer character drink hard, smoke hard, party hard–he’s like an outlaw and the character fit Future Fambo.”
