AUDIO: Ward 21′s “Still Disturbed” LP Mix + “Mic Magician” Remixes

Words by DJ Autograph—

Ward-21=Still-Disturbed

In November I did a write up on “Mic Magican,” the lead single from Still Disturbed, Ward 21‘s first album in five years. Now, three months later, the album has just been released via the Germaica Digital label, and can be purchased on iTunes here.

Badda Don Dada: Ward 21 Channel Super Cat on “Mic Magician”

Ward-21-Badda-Badda-Gang

I might be a Jamaican but my introduction to Ward 21’s “Mic Magician” is a fortunate and direct result of my current effort to learn Swedish. I was listening to Safari Sound’s show on Swedish National Radio Friday, when I was blown away by the Super Cat sample-driven “Mic Magician,” featuring Marcy Chin and Deewunn, the newest members of Ward 21′s extended Badda Badda Gang family. The song’s use of “Under Pressure” is easily the best use of a Super Cat sample this side of Nas’ Salaam Remi-produced “The Don.”

LargeUp Premiere: Wildlife! x Ward 21, “No Future”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Roxy Reboot

It was definitely a great moment when the burgeoning punk rock scene met up with its Jamaican cousin—reggae—in mid ’70s London. The union added musical depth to punk, and its influence was felt in Jamaica, too, leaving us with awesome stuff like “Punky Reggae Party” and The Clash. And it still resonates today, as seen by the latest project from Swiss producer Wildlife! (a/k/a Samuel Riot).

Audio: “Bunx Up” with Deewunn and Marcy Chin

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Dee Wunn Bunx Up

More than any other producers in dancehall today, Ward 21 know how to get the best out of the genre’s underutilized female contingent. Suku, Kunley and Mean Dog brought us the ladies supergroup TNT (aka Badda Badda Gals), featuring three of Jamaica’s most entertaining and consistent female deejays, in Tifa, Timberlee, and our own sex columnist, Natalie Storm. The Ward 21 crew’s latest female protege is Marcy Chin, with whom they’ve paired with their male muse, Deewunn, for “Bunx Up.”
