Words by Kaya.lah—

As the Caribbean Carnival calendar goes, after the March Madness of Brazil, T&T and Dominica, it’s up to Jamaica, then St. Maarten and Rock City—that’s St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.— to carry the load of the road into May. As on our sister islands across the Caribbean, carnival on St. Thomas—also known as VI Carnival— is a celebration of life, with music, food, bacchanal and general revelry coming together to produce festive fun, joy and community togetherness. Now Things: Jillionaire Launches Feel Up Records

Words by Jesse Serwer— jillionaire-man_square

Long before he became an official member of Major Lazer, we already knew Jillionaire as a musical renaissance man who was connecting the dots between the Caribbean and various worldwide electronic music scenes with his remixes, eclectic DJ sets—and the occasional LargeUp listicle. The Brooklyn-based imprint officially launches April 22, with the release of Modern Thunder, the debut full-length from Toronto’s Grand Analog. Our partners over at Okayplayer recently premiered “Howl Like Wolves,” a catchy introduction to the kitchen-sink hip-hop sound of Guyanese-Canadian brothers Odario and Ofield Wiliams.

We already knew A$AP Ferg liked dancehall—now, Harlem’s Trap Lord, who happens be of Trini heritage, is getting into soca as well. Ferg has taken inspiration from the Soca Viking himself, Bunji Garlin, with “Petit Valley,” a freestyle on Garlin’s single “Carnival Tabanca.” He seems to have been inspired to create his own ode to Trinidad after visiting the island last month for Carnival, apparently rediscovering the beauty of both the music, and (naturally) the women.
