Words by DJ Theory —

MM 48

We’re back with your morning-after-the-Super-Bowl edition of Mixtape Mondays on deck. We know Beyonce’s dancehall-infused halftime performance last night has you in a Caribbean frame of mind, so we’re covering all of the bases with roots, rap, dancehall and electro-bashment business. Your Monday soundtrack should be looking a whole lot better right now. And look for our new LargeUp mix series launching this Friday with a mix from Jillionaire. Boom.

LargeUp Premiere: Jus Now’s “One Time” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

JusNow-OneTimeEP

Occupying a space between power soca, steelpan and the freakiest outer limits of U.K. dance music, “One Time” is the debut single from Jus Now, the Anglo-Trinidadian duo of Interface (of Bristol, England) and LAZAbeam (of T&T). As jarring as the song’s unique sound is the accompanying video, a manic trip through Port of Spain’s streets, roti shops, parrot’s nests and a dojo full of karate kids. We’ve seen some ambitious soca videos this Carnival season, but this is some really next-level business.

Musical Nightcap: Watch Kes the Band’s “Tuesday on the Rocks” Video

Kes the Band Daryll Willoughby

Life is good, it’s better when your life revolves around singing about having a good time ’cause your job is being a soca singer, and it’s even better if your name is Kees Diffenthaler. The leader of Trinidad’s Kes the Band just seems to be having an exceptional time at life, the latest exhibit being his video for “Tuesday on the Rocks,” his ridiculously catchy tune on Bambino Musik and Justin “Jus Bus” Nation’s Gyal Season riddim.

Video: Machel Montano + Freetown Collective “Represent” For Trinidad

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Machel Montano Represent

The 13-minute-long clip for Machel Montano and Trini band Freetown Collective‘s “Represent (Remix)” is definitely not your typical soca video. As much of a short film as it is a music video, the visuals are a continuation of God Loves the Fighter (read our story about it here), director Damian Marcano’s upcoming movie set against Port of Spain’s criminal underworld. And, though the song has a soca riddim, it’s message is a cultural one more typical of reggae.
