Large Up Interview: Jus Now Are Taking Soca Back to The Future

Words by Marcha M. Johnson, Photos by Arnaldo James— jus-now-sam-lazabeam-2

Amidst the surge of soca tunes released for this year’s Trinidad Carnival, you may have noticed, on tracks such as Bunji Garlin’s “Truck on D Road” and Machel Montano’s “Junction,” the emergence of a fresh yet nostalgic sound that immediately commands your attention with signature percussion and authoritative bass. If you were paying attention, you might have even sampled a bit of this phenomenon last year when Bunji Garlin released the song “Savage.” We decided it was time to unmask the masterminds behind this new evolution in soca: Trinidad’s Keshav Singh aka LAZABeam and the UK’s Sam “Interface” Chadburn, collectively known as Jus Now.

As the Caribbean Carnival calendar goes, after the March Madness of Brazil, T&T and Dominica, it’s up to Jamaica, then St. Maarten and Rock City—that’s St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.— to carry the load of the road into May. Now Things: Jillionaire Launches Feel Up Records

Words by Jesse Serwer— jillionaire-man_square

Long before he became an official member of Major Lazer, we already knew Jillionaire as a musical renaissance man who was connecting the dots between the Caribbean and various worldwide electronic music scenes with his remixes, eclectic DJ sets—and the occasional LargeUp listicle. Now, the man we’ve long known as “Trini Chris” is branching back out on his own with the launch of an eclectic new label, Feel Up Records.

The Brooklyn-based imprint officially launches April 22, with the release of Modern Thunder, the debut full-length from Toronto’s Grand Analog. Our partners over at Okayplayer recently premiered “Howl Like Wolves,” a catchy introduction to the kitchen-sink hip-hop sound of Guyanese-Canadian brothers Odario and Ofield Wiliams.
