Words by DJ Gravy—

When Sean Paul and Konshens performed “Want Dem All” on the newly relaunched Arsenio Hall Show the other day, it got us thinking, hmmmmm. “Mr. Let’s Get Busy” (that’s Arsenio, for you young’uns) had a whole heap of reggae artists on his original show back in the day. But this clip of big, dutty, stinkin Shabba Ranks and R&B singer Johnny Gill performing their combination tune “Slow And Sexy” definitely takes the cake.

We thought it was awesome when Shabba Ranks acknowledged A$AP Ferg’s eponymous tribute song by appearing in the rapper’s “Shabbavideo — but now he’s taking it to the next level. The new remix released over the weekend starts off with a verse by the one and only Shabba himself (R-A-N-K-S), and also features Migos and Busta Rhymes alongside Ferg, of course. With a lineup like that, it had to be great — and it definitely delivers. Shabba, and 90s dancehall in general, have been big hits with hip-hop artists recently (we’ve listed some of our favorite appearances here).

Werl’ a Books: Vybz Kartel Goes Back to “School”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Vybz-Kartel-School-artwork

This week means back to school for kids in many parts of the world, including Jamaica, and Vybz Kartel—yes, Vybz Kartel—has a message for them. The currently incarcerated dancehall star may not fit your notion of a role model but his influence on Jamaican youth can not be understated. Fortunately, he’s used his platform to drop an effectively simple back-to-school PSA that doubles as a really, really good dancehall song. The succinctly titled “School” finds Kartel chatting in a Shabba-like fashion, over a ’90s dancehall-style riddim quite similar to the one from Kartel’s Shabba tribute, “Gaza Ting A Ling.” Among the advice dispensed by the deposed Werl’ Boss:
