Throwback Thursdays: Salaam Remi on Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes The Hotstepper”

Words by Salaam Remi

On a hot July day in Summer 2012, LargeUp visited producer Salaam Remi at his Instrument Zoo studio in Miami, for a wide-ranging conversation on everything from his father (musician/promoter Van Gibbs) to Nas’ then freshly released Life is Good album. One memorable story he shared with us involved the genesis of Ini Kamoze‘s “Here Comes the Hotstepper,” Remi’s first production to top the Billboard singles chaart. With today being Ini Kamoze’s 57th birthday, and the 20th anniversary of “Hotstepper” hitting No. 1 looming on the horizon, we thought we’d let Mr. Remi tell the story...

LargeUp Premiere: The Red, Gold & Green Machine — “The Look Of Love”

Words by Natalie Weiner—

L.A.-based group The Red, Gold & Green Machine describe themselves as “Native Tongues meets Parliament-Funkadelic at a neighborhood party in Jamaica,” which could go down in history as one of the greatest self-described sounds ever. Fortunately, they live up to the hype with their new single “The Look Of Love,” a reggae/hip-hop/R&B groove with some Salaam Remi-esque soulful production from Selecta Kram. Featuring LA underground rap staple Dr. Oop alongside singer Tonye “Magic T” Aganaba, the single is the first release off of the group’s upcoming album Planet Africa, out June 9.

Badda Don Dada: Ward 21 Channel Super Cat on “Mic Magician”

Words by DJ Autograph

I might be a Jamaican but my introduction to Ward 21’s “Mic Magician” is a fortunate and direct result of my current effort to learn Swedish. I was listening to Safari Sound’s show on Swedish National Radio Friday, when I was blown away by the Super Cat sample-driven “Mic Magician,” featuring Marcy Chin and Deewunn, the newest members of Ward 21’s extended Badda Badda Gang family. The song’s use of “Under Pressure” is easily the best use of a Super Cat sample this side of Nas’ Salaam Remi-produced “The Don.”
