Impressions: Images From Rebel Salute

Photos by Martei Korley—

Marcia Griffiths at Rebel Salute

Rebel Salute is Jamaica’s most significant annual reggae festival. While Sting bottles all of its hype into a single night, Sumfest splits its focus between pop and dancehall and Jazz and Blues is something else entirely, Tony Rebel’s gathering sets the tone for the year in reggae and also dancehall. This year’s two-day edition of Rebel Salute (held Jan. 18 and 19 at Richmond Estate in St Ann) was one of the most diverse and star-powered editions yet with performances from Sizzla, Busy Signal, Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley, Aswad, Chronixx, Richie Spice, I-Wayne, No-Maddz, Protoje, the return of Terror Fabulous and, of course, Tony Rebel and his wife, Queen Ifrika. Scroll through for Martei Korley’s photo series from Rebel Salute’s Day One, and stay tuned for Part Two.

Ackee And Salt-Phish: Top jamband Phish tribute Gregory Isaacs

Words by DJ Gravy

It seems you can find reggae obsessives just about everywhere. You may not think of Jamaica when you see masses of (mostly) white kids at a jamband show or festival but there is an undeniable connection beyond just those donning dreadlocks. Phish happen to be the biggest touring act on this circuit (and one of the highest grossing bands on tour ever.) They’ve always incorporated reggae into their widely versatile sound since their genesis in 1983 and their crowd see a cultural connection that could be overlooked but definitely holds some validity.

Words by DJ Gravy

DubShot Records is a NYC-based digital label and music service primarily servicing “left of center reggae, dancehall and new school dub” in the words of founder Chris Schlarb. His lengthy tenure at VP Records and Ryko coupled with a great appetite for Caribbean music built him a great network and working with Sean Paul’s Road Manager, Steve Wilson, he eventually began promoting projects from Transdub Massiv, Rootz Underground, Jovi Rockwell and more. As his brainchild, DubShot Records was founded to promote artist from the Caribbean diaspora as well as those inspired by it.
